bonsai house
Project Type : Residential Location : Venice, CA Building size : 3,200 SF Completed : 2022 Photographer : Edmund Sumner This modest addition and ADU is a progression of frames and vistas creating a gallery-like experience and a lens with which to view a world class collection of bonsai trees. Sustainable features include solar electric panels and a high capacity 7,200 gallon stormwater collection tank. This bonsai house architecturally frames an addition and ADU around an old, yet majestic pepper tree, and an exquisite collection of bonsai trees. With the owner’s love of bonsai and respect for nature, space and structure gently rest and blur into the gardens. The entry transports you into a naturally lit hallway from sawtooth skylights above. As you move through the space, sunlight and massive concrete frames highlight specific trees and views creating a gallery like experience in this indoor/outdoor home. Water usage was a primary concern and a massive 7,200 gallon stormwater tank was installed beneath the central green lawn. The storage capacity more than supplies enough water to get through the ever dry LA summers.
